Assurance in Troubled Times

He is not afraid of bad news. His heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady, he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries

~ Psalms 112: 7-8, ESV ~

Recovery teaches us to live courageously in a troubled world. We are living in a fear-based world. Bad news is preached about over various news and social media outlets. We have grave concerns for our own self, family, friends, and even our own society. This may even be legitimate fears. Courage comes when we face our own fears. The greatest fear most individuals face is the fear of their own inadequacy of their inability to overcome.

Much of the fear we experience is based on our own illusions and expectations of what we believe about ourselves, others, and life. We expect ourselves to be perfect. Expect others to treat us with kindness, dignity, and respect. We desire a comfortable life without any adversity and challenges. Breaking ourselves free of these illusions helps us redefine who we are and accept our imperfections. Understand that not everyone will treat us with dignity and respect we desire. Nor, will we live a life where there is no adversity and challenges.

Because, recovery teaches that we are to not only face our own fears and challenges, we are to use them as opportunities for growth. It takes courage for us to face that which scares us the most. Through our courage, and empowerment from our Sovereign God, we have no need to fear. We are able to stand firm, with confidence, assurance, because our Savior has overcome all things.
