When Other People are not Measuring up

And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

~ Luke 5:30, ESV ~

When other people do not measure up to our perceived expectations, we begin to grumble and murmur. Our nature is to be overcritical and causation for our irritability. A common experience when we have established unrealistic expectations whereby we measure other people. Controlled smiles, blasting others around us, or bringing home our own personal critical reactions. These are all evidence of how people have violated those expectations.

It is when we fall into this pattern where other people are not measuring up to what we expect of them. We become too critical, or demanding, of ourselves and others. This rigidity prevents us from operating out of grace and patience toward self and others. This does not mean that we lower our standards. Values helps us set healthy boundaries with self and others. What this does mean is that we lower our rigid expectations of self, others, and life where there is more fluidity. Developing healthy and realistic expectations helps us move toward more tolerance, acceptance, patience, and showing grace and forgiveness.

Overall, we become less judgmental and more caring. Less critical and resentful and become more accepting and forgiving. After all, our Heavenly Father has established expectations, yet also is long-suffering and patient toward us as we grow and learn to become more like Him.
